Lifetime cost of men's haircuts: about $21,130 at today's barbershop prices
A transparent menhaircuts.net calculation built from published prices, visit frequency, tip rates and life expectancy.
At today's average barbershop price of $43[1], about 7 cuts a year[1] and a 20% tip, a US man spends about $361 a year and $21,130 on haircuts between age 18 and 76.5, the 2024 male life expectancy[2] (menhaircuts.net calculation). Our scenarios range from $11,876 (no tip) to $30,186.

Key findings
- SQUIRE's data from more than 7,000 US barbershops puts the average cut at $43 and says the average client gets about 7 haircuts a year[1].
- At $43 a cut, 7 cuts a year and a 20% tip, a man spends $361.20 a year and $21,130.20 over 58.5 adult years (menhaircuts.net calculation)[1][2].
- Men who get 10 cuts a year, the average in a 2025 Talker Research poll for Sport Clips, would spend $30,186 at the same price and tip (menhaircuts.net calculation)[3].
- At StyleSeat's $29 national average and 7 cuts a year with no tip, the lifetime total falls to $11,875.50 (menhaircuts.net calculation)[5].
- The 20% tip alone adds $3,521.70 over a lifetime in the main scenario (menhaircuts.net calculation)[1].
- At SQUIRE's 30-minute average service length, 409.5 haircuts take about 205 hours in the chair (menhaircuts.net calculation)[1].
- Haircut prices rose 48.4% from September 2016 to September 2026, faster than overall inflation of 39.6% (menhaircuts.net calculation), so future totals in actual dollars will likely be higher[4][6].
How much does the average man spend on haircuts in his lifetime?
No agency tracks lifetime haircut spending, so we calculated it from published inputs. Our main scenario uses SQUIRE's national average barbershop cut of $43 and its note that the average client gets about 7 haircuts a year[1]. We add a 20% tip, the low end of SQUIRE's regional tip averages of 20% to 23%[1].
For the length of a haircut-paying life, we count from age 18 to 76.5 years, the US male life expectancy at birth in 2024[2]. That is 58.5 years.
Formula (menhaircuts.net calculation): price per cut × cuts per year × (1 + tip rate) × years. With our main inputs: $43 × 7 × 1.20 × 58.5 = $21,130.20. Without the tip, the total is $17,608.50.
All figures use current prices. They show what a lifetime of haircuts would cost at 2025–2026 prices, not a forecast of what a man will actually pay as prices change.

How much does a man spend on haircuts per year?
The yearly cost depends mostly on two things: the price of the cut and how often he goes. SQUIRE's average client gets about 7 haircuts a year[1]. A 2025 Talker Research poll of 2,000 American men, commissioned by Sport Clips, found the average man gets his hair cut 10 times a year[3].
For price, we use three published figures: StyleSeat's $29 national average for a men's haircut[5], Zenoti's $34 median barbershop ticket for 2025[7], and SQUIRE's $43 average barbershop cut[1]. Zenoti reports an average ticket per visit, not a list price for a haircut alone[7].
At 7 cuts a year with a 20% tip, a man spends $243.60 a year at $29, $285.60 at $34 and $361.20 at $43 (menhaircuts.net calculation). At 10 cuts a year, those totals rise to $348.00, $408.00 and $516.00 (menhaircuts.net calculation).
| Price per cut | 7 cuts a year | 10 cuts a year |
|---|---|---|
| $29 (StyleSeat average) | $243.60 | $348.00 |
| $34 (Zenoti median barbershop ticket) | $285.60 | $408.00 |
| $43 (SQUIRE average barbershop cut) | $361.20 | $516.00 |
How does the lifetime total change with price and frequency?
Across the six combinations of price and frequency, the lifetime total with a 20% tip runs from $14,250.60 (a $29 cut, 7 times a year) to $30,186.00 (a $43 cut, 10 times a year) (menhaircuts.net calculation)[5][1][3].
Frequency moves the total as much as price does. Going from 7 to 10 cuts a year at $43 adds $9,055.80 over a lifetime, while trading a $43 shop for a $29 one at 7 cuts a year saves $6,879.60 (menhaircuts.net calculation).
Men who keep a tight fade usually go more often than men with longer styles. Our guide to the cost of a skin fade covers what that maintenance looks like.

How many haircuts does a man get in his lifetime?
At about 7 haircuts a year from age 18 to 76.5, a man gets 409.5 haircuts (7 × 58.5, menhaircuts.net calculation)[1][2]. At the 10 a year reported in the Talker Research poll, the count reaches 585 (menhaircuts.net calculation)[3].
SQUIRE puts the average service length at 30 minutes[1]. At that pace, 409.5 haircuts add up to about 205 hours in the barber's chair, and 585 haircuts to about 293 hours (menhaircuts.net calculation). That leaves out travel and waiting time.
SQUIRE's booking data also show that repeat clients return every 48.5 days on average, which works out to about 7.5 visits a year (365 ÷ 48.5, menhaircuts.net calculation)[1]. Our sister report on how often men get haircuts compares these frequency measures in more detail.
How much does tipping add to the lifetime cost of haircuts?
A 20% tip on a $43 cut is $8.60. Over 409.5 haircuts, that adds $3,521.70 to the lifetime total (menhaircuts.net calculation)[1].
In SQUIRE's data, average tips were 23% in the South and Midwest[1]. At 23% on the same $43 cut and 7 cuts a year, tips add $4,049.96 and the lifetime total becomes $21,658.46 (menhaircuts.net calculation).
Tipping habits vary a lot. In Pew Research Center's 2023 survey, 65% of haircut customers said they always tip and 5% never do[8]. Our barber tipping statistics report covers who tips and how much.
How has inflation changed the cost of a haircut?
The Consumer Price Index for haircuts and other personal care services rose from 154.813 in September 2016 to 229.752 in September 2026, a 48.4% increase[4]. Overall consumer prices rose 39.6% over the same decade (menhaircuts.net calculations)[6].
Put another way, a cut that costs $43 in September 2026 would have cost about $28.97 in September 2016 if its price had tracked the index exactly ($43 × 154.813 ÷ 229.752, menhaircuts.net calculation)[4].
Haircut prices rose faster than overall prices in seven of the ten September-to-September periods from 2017 to 2026 (menhaircuts.net calculation)[4][6]. If that pattern continues, a man's actual lifetime spending in nominal dollars will be higher than the current-price totals on this page. We do not project future prices.

Why do lifetime haircut cost estimates vary so much?
Any lifetime figure is only as good as its three main assumptions: the price of a cut, how often a man goes and how many years he keeps going. Change any one of them and the total moves by thousands of dollars.
Price data depend on who is counted. SQUIRE's $43 comes from barbershops that pay for its booking software, StyleSeat's $29 covers its own stylists across many settings, and Zenoti's $34 is an average ticket per visit[1][5][7]. Frequency estimates also differ: booking data see visits to one shop, while a poll asks men to count every cut[1][3].
Habits also change over a lifetime. A man in his twenties keeping a sharp fade may book far more often than average, while the same man at 60 with thinning hair may go less often or switch to clippers at home. A single average applied across 58.5 years smooths over all of that, which is why we show a range rather than one number.
How does this compare with what households actually spend?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics measures what households spend, not individual men. In 2024 the average US household spent $479 on personal care services, which includes haircuts, salon visits and similar paid services for everyone in the home[9]. About 57% of households (56.99%) reported spending in this category that year[9].
Over the same 58.5 years, $479 a year comes to $28,021.50 per household (menhaircuts.net calculation)[9]. That is higher than our main men's haircut scenario, which makes sense because the household figure covers more people and more services.
Cutting at home is the main way to lower the total. Our barbershop vs at-home grooming cost guide compares the two.

Methodology and limitations
This report is a menhaircuts.net calculation. Formula: price per cut × cuts per year × (1 + tip rate) × years. Prices: SQUIRE's $43 average barbershop cut (May 2025 to April 2026 platform data), Zenoti's $34 median barbershop ticket (2026 benchmark report, 2025 data) and StyleSeat's $29 national average. Frequency: about 7 cuts a year (SQUIRE) and 10 a year (Talker Research poll of 2,000 men for Sport Clips, July 2025). Tip: 20%, the low end of SQUIRE's regional averages. Years: age 18 to 76.5, the 2024 US male life expectancy at birth from CDC NCHS Data Brief 548. Inflation comparisons use BLS CPI series CUUR0000SEGC01 and CUUR0000SA0. Household context uses the BLS Consumer Expenditure Survey for 2024. All sources were opened and checked on October 15, 2026.
Limitations
This is a model, not a measurement. Real spending depends on where a man lives, how often he cuts his hair, whether he cuts at home and how his habits change with age. Life expectancy at birth is used as a simple end point; a man who has already reached 18 can expect to live somewhat longer on average, which would raise the totals. Platform data from SQUIRE, Zenoti and StyleSeat reflect businesses that use those tools, and Zenoti's figure is an average ticket per visit rather than a haircut list price. SQUIRE's 7-a-year figure is a rounded context note in its report. All totals use 2025–2026 prices and do not account for future price changes. Childhood haircuts are excluded.
