How to Figure Out Your Face Shape
at Home (Mirror Method)
Before you pick a haircut by face shape, you need to know yours. Here's the simple mirror-and-measure method — no app required.

Every "best haircut for your face shape" guide assumes you already know your face shape — but most men have never actually checked. It takes five minutes. All you need is a mirror and a tape measure — a piece of string works too. Below is the method barbers and stylists actually use. Measure, compare, done.
The Four Measurements
Pull your hair back off your forehead and take these four measurements across your face:
- Forehead: across the widest point of your forehead.
- Cheekbones: across the top of your cheekbones, from one to the other.
- Jawline: from the tip of your chin to below your ear, then double it (or measure jaw angle to jaw angle).
- Face length: from the center of your hairline straight down to the tip of your chin.
Read Your Shape
Compare the numbers — the biggest one and the ratios tell you the shape:

| Length > width; cheekbones widest; soft jaw | Oval |

| Cheekbones widest; narrow forehead & jaw | Diamond |
Quick Visual Check
If you don't want to measure, a rough visual works too: look straight in the mirror and ask "is my face longer than it is wide, or about equal?" and "is my jaw sharp and angular, or soft and rounded?" Those two questions separate most shapes. Really — that's often enough. Then head to the matching guide — oval, round, square, long, heart, or diamond — for the cuts that suit you.
