Beard Oil vs Beard Balm:
Which Do You Actually Need?
Two products, two jobs. Here's what each actually does and whether you need one, both, or neither.
By Jessica Hamilton — Master Stylist & Creative Director
The short version: beard oil conditions the skin and hair; beard balm conditions and adds light hold. Oil is the essential one — it addresses the actual problem most bearded men have, which is dry, itchy skin underneath. Balm is a styling addition for longer beards.
What Each One Does
| Beard Oil | Beard Balm | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Moisturises skin under the beard, softens hair | Conditions + light hold and shaping |
| Texture | Liquid, absorbs fast | Waxy solid, melts in hands |
| Contains | Carrier oils (jojoba, argan) + fragrance | Oils + butters + beeswax |
| Best for | All beard lengths, especially short-medium | Medium to long beards, flyaway control |
| When | Daily, after showering | When you want shape or on longer beards |
| Do you need it? | Yes — this is the essential one | Only if your beard is long enough to need taming |
Which Should You Buy?
- Stubble to short beard: oil only. Balm has nothing to hold at that length.
- Medium beard: oil daily; balm occasionally if it looks unruly.
- Long beard: both — oil for skin and softness, balm for shape and flyaways.
- Itchy, flaky skin under the beard: oil, and more consistently than you think.
- Coarse or curly beard hair: both help; balm tames more effectively.
How to Apply
- Apply to a clean, towel-dry beard — damp, not soaking, helps absorption.
- Oil: 3–6 drops depending on length. Warm in palms, work into the skin first, then through the hair.
- Balm: a small scoop, melt between palms until liquid, then work through from roots to ends.
- Comb through afterwards to distribute evenly.
- Less is more — too much of either looks greasy and can clog the skin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What's the difference between beard oil and beard balm?+
Beard oil is a liquid that moisturises the skin under your beard and softens the hair; beard balm is a waxy product that conditions and adds light hold for shaping. Oil is the essential one; balm is a styling addition for longer beards.
Q2: Do I need beard balm or is oil enough?+
For stubble and short beards, oil alone is enough — balm has nothing to hold at that length. Medium beards benefit from oil daily plus occasional balm, and long beards genuinely benefit from both.
Q3: How do I apply beard oil properly?+
On a clean, towel-dry beard, use 3-6 drops depending on length. Warm it between your palms, then work it into the skin underneath first — that's where dryness and itch come from — before running it through the hair. Comb through to distribute.
Q4: Will beard oil stop my beard itching?+
Usually, yes — most beard itch comes from dry skin underneath rather than the hair itself, and oil addresses exactly that. Apply daily and consistently. If itching persists or you have significant flaking or soreness, see a dermatologist rather than adding more product.
Q5: Can I use too much beard oil?+
Yes — too much looks greasy and can leave the skin feeling clogged. Start with 3 drops for a short beard and build up only if your beard still feels dry. More product doesn't mean more conditioning.
